RECIPE: Carrot Pulp Salad or Dip

I've been juicing a lot lately, and looking for ways to use juicer pulp.  I've actually read that it's healthier to toss the juice and use the pulp! 

Here's something I made last weekend that was super easy and got rave reviews.  It was dense enough to use as a dip, and I had the leftovers as a side salad the next day.

Carrot Pulp Salad or Dip

Ingredients

  • 2 cups carrot pulp from juicing peeled carrots (you can use grated carrots, but I prefer pulp!)
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice, from one lemon
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon honey, to taste
  • Heaping 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 T. finely minced red onion

Instructions

  1. In a salad bowl, combine the Dijon mustard, lemon juice, honey, olive oil, salt and pepper. Add the carrots, fresh parsley and red onion and toss well. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  2. Notes: Depending on the sweetness of the carrots, you may want to add more or less honey. Also, if you make this salad ahead of time, be sure to check the seasoning again before serving as the flavors tend to mellow.

Dementia and Alzheimer's

A few days ago I received a request from a friend to share what I know about these diseases.  I have been researching them for years.  By publishing my thoughts here my friend can refer to them easily AND it may help others in the same position.  It also helps me consolidate what I know.

I have to emphasize that what is written here is purely MY OPINION and should not replace advice from a medical professional.  

This is what I am doing
 to mitigate the chance that I might get one of these diseases.  




Before I go into what I've learned in my research, I need to mention The Bredesen Protocol.  It's a new therapy, published in August 2017, which claims to both prevent and cure cognitive decline.  My friend alerted me to it (it was news to me) and asked me to investigate.  I did, and I was pleasantly surprised.  At first glance, Dr. Bredesen appeared to address all the things I had learned in my research! 

According to this video on The Bredesen Protocol, there is now SCIENCE supporting the nutritional and lifestyle advice that naturopathic/functional/restorative medicine doctors have been advocating FOR YEARS!   

If you aren't familiar with the terms, naturopathic, functional and restorative doctors don't treat symptoms they look for the cause and work to eliminate it.  They make their money by curing you.

You will need to find a naturopathic/functional/restorative doctor to overcome cognitive decline.  The drugs that allopathic doctors use are prohibitively expensive, have debilitating side effects, and they don't work.  My mother took Aricept and Namenda for years, to the tune of $4000/month, and she still died early from dementia.  There ARE other more effective options....


I reviewed The Bredesen Protocol HERE.  This is an EXCELLENT protocol if you know you do not have heavy metal toxicity, chemical toxicity, or an MTHFR snp.  Bredesen admits that it is very hard to test for heavy metals.  I explain MTHFR below.  It's a known precursor for cognitive decline.

Background:

Most of us have heard that Alzheimer's disease is characterized by amyloid plaque in the brain.  Dr. Bredesen explains that this plaque is your body's way of protecting you from the three main causes of the disease. You don't want to remove this plaque until you remove the reason it's there.

You can 'get' Alzheimer's from one or more of the following conditions:
1. inflammation/glycotoxicity (glucose/insulin imbalance),
2. endocrine problems, and
3. toxins/infections.  

In order to design a treatment plan, multiple lab tests are done to determine your current levels of the markers for these conditions. 

Using the results of the tests, the Bredesen Protocol designs a program to first normalize and then OPTIMIZE your health.  If you enjoy optimal health, you can't 'get' Alzheimer's. 

This is where my prior research comes into play.  If you read my review of The Bredesen Protocol you know I think his program is worth following except that he doesn't address lectins, MTHFR snps, and heavy metal/chemical detox.   

Here's why this is a problem:

While Dr. Bredesen does explain the amino acid homocysteine and how vitamins B6 and B12 keep it low he does not mention MTHFR (MethyleneTetraHydroFolate Reductase) which, among many other things, is responsible for creating the type of folate essential for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine.  High levels of (unconverted) homocysteine are a marker for cognitive decline.

MethyleneTetraHydroFolate Reductase (MTHFR) is both an enzyme and a gene and is crucial to the body for many reasons. Mutations in this gene (SNPs) result in decreased activity of the enzyme, which causes issues with methylation, leading to the disruption of important and essential bodily functions – which include the ability to eliminate toxins properly. (There are other genes related to methylation which must also be tested, too many to list here.)

Here's a quote from this interview with Chris Kresser:
The reactions that occur when one molecule passes a methyl group to another make things like creatine, carnitine, CoQ10, phosphatidylcholine, melatonin, and tons of other really important substances in the body.

Methylation controls sulfur metabolism, which balances the need for methyl groups, glutathione to control oxidative stress, and other sulfur metabolites like cysteine, taurine, and sulfate.  Methylation influences the production of ATP, which is the fundamental energy unit of the cell.  If the cell can’t produce ATP, then there’s going to be inadequate energy in the body, nothing will work well, and you get a breakdown or an impairment of your mitochondrial function.  This is something that can affect pretty much every tissue and organ system in the body because it’s working on the most fundamental processes within the body.

Methylation, in particular, though, seems to affect certain systems more than others.   It affects detoxification.  As I mentioned, methylation is required to produce glutathione, which is one of the major molecules in a detoxification cycle, but if you don’t methylate properly, you won’t be able to detoxify properly, so what this can lead to is a higher susceptibility to heavy metal toxicity and toxicity from any source like pesticides, other environmental toxins and pollutants, mold toxicity, toxicity from lipopolysaccharide or any other bacterial or pathogen-based toxin – so just in a general, an increased susceptibility to toxic overload because the body is not able to detoxify properly.
EVERY MTHFR website I visited listed Alzheimer's as a symptom of MTHFR snps.  Why Bredesen doesn't address them is beyond me.

An estimated 50% of the population may have inherited one copy of allele C677T (heterozygous C/T) while up to 25% may have inherited two copies (homozygous T/T).   Individuals homozygous for C677T have at least a 50-60% reduction in MTHFR activity.  I feel this is too large a percentage to ignore.

Bredesen's solution to elevated homocysteine is to supplement with B vitamins but this is neither effective nor desirable if you have MTHFR snps because they don't work and can make the problem worse.



Whether you have an MTHFR snp or not, all of us have been exposed to heavy metals because we cannot avoid them(We also all have other chemicals in our bodies because we cannot avoid them, either.)   In addition...we all have glyphosate (Round-up) in our bodies even if we eat 100% organic because it's in everything including the air we breathe (and because even organic corn and soy, which is fed to all the animals we eat, is contaminated with glyphosate due to drift).  To make matters worse, we all have aluminum in our bodies because it, too, is in the air due to cloud seeding and the need to prevent air disasters

Unfortunately, glyphosate and mercury impact our ability to eliminate all toxins which can contribute to both inflammation and endocrine problems (causes 1 and 2 above):
Mercury prevents us from utilizing zinc, and our detox pathways need zinc.

Glyphosate chelates (binds) minerals, like zinc and selenium, and prevents them from being absorbed.  Selenium is a potent binder for mercury. 

Aluminum binds with glyphosate which means we have to detox both of them simultaneously.  But, if we have mercury, we have trouble detoxing other metals.

Do you see the circular nature of this problem?   Glyphosate and mercury tie up zinc which compromises our detox pathways.  We can't get rid of glyphosate without also detoxing aluminum, and we can't do that as long as we have mercury.  We must get rid of mercury...and all the other toxins it has caused us to accumulate.

(If you have any MTHFR snps, you must address them first or you will not be able to detox mercury.)

If you don't have an MTHFR snp, and you've lived a life that limited your exposure to a plethora of toxins, perhaps you don't need to be concerned about this.    Your body may have been able to eliminate the toxins you were exposed to, as it is designed to do.  But, since I haven't spent most of my life in a valley in the Rockies or a remote village in South America foraging for my food, I know I have toxins in my body that need to be purged.

So, referring back to the three causes Dr. Bredesen has identified,  *I* am going to address the toxins part of the trifecta first and hope that eliminates the other two.    

Here's what *I* plan to do:

The plan described below is based on the research I've done and the knowledge I have about what I've been exposed to in my food, the air I breathe, and what I put on my body.  We've been eating 90% organic for almost 10 years, and eliminated toxic home and personal care products years ago as well.  If you have a life-long exposure to these things, you should not attempt to detox without professional help.   Everything I'm doing up to that point is "safe".  You should do it, to!


I had all my amalgam tooth fillings removed years ago.  (If you still have even one please have them removed by a mercury-safe dentist.  You are flooding your body with mercury every time you chew!)  You should never attempt to detox with intact amalgam tooth fillings - you'll kill yourself.


I have a SWAMI, which is a personalized genotype diet plan that identifies the food lectins problematic for my genotype.  I avoid those foods whenever possible.  Dr. Bredesen's diet eliminates ALL lectins, even those which aren't a problem for certain blood types.

If you don't have a SWAMI you should get one as it will give you more food choices!  Use this video to fill out the questionnaire. You can fill out the secretor question after you've had your genome decoded.  I had my saliva tested for secretor status when I got my SWAMI years ago.



Having already done the two things mentioned above, I am now going to do the following:

FIRST, I'm having my genome decoded by 23-and-me and Ancestry.com.  If you do this, make sure you get the health+ancestry version of 23-and-me.  If you've already had your genome decoded by 23-and-me and the file type is V4 you will not need Ancestry.com data.  Unfortunately, 23-and-me changed their result set and it's no longer complete.

SECOND, I will send the results to Opus 23 (Opus 23 needs both sets of results, Dr. Bredesen uses only 23-And-Me)
If I have any MTHFR snps Opus23 will recommend ways to overcome them.  One of the things the MTHFR genes control are methylation pathways - the body's toxin removal processes - and these MUST be working properly before I start mobilizing toxins.
If I have the APOE4 geneOpus23 will recommend ways to overcome it taking my other snps into account.

In Feb 2016 Opus23 cost $385.
In Feb 2018 the price had gone up to $550
If you're going to do this, don't delay!
THIRD, after following OPUS23 recommendations, when I know my methylation pathways are working, I will start detoxing heavy metals and chemicals using the products and protocols described in this Klinghardt video and this Klinghardt pdf.  Dr. Klinghardt is a world renowned restorative practitioner who has contributed significantly to our understanding of metal toxicity and how to eliminate toxins which is why I chose his protocol.
I could order blood tests to determine which metals I need to detox; but, according to Dr. Klinghardt, we ALL have heavy metals because they are everywhere, and it's hard to test for them because your body sequesters them so they may not show up in blood, urine, or hair analyses.  Based on my life to this point, I assume I have them and need to get rid of them.

 (UPDATE:  After reading over the material hundreds of times, trying to get these pages both accurate and easy to read,  I've decide to start lining my gut with binders even though I haven't yet done all the other steps.  This should trap any new toxins I ingest/inhale before they can be added to whatever is already in my body.  It should make detoxing easier once I get to the 'mobilizing' stage.  Below is the complete list of binders, I crossed out the ones I'm not going to take until I start mobilizing:

The clinoptilolite should be taken away from food so I take it in-between meals.
I take the silica in-between meals to bind aluminum and help detox glyphosate.
I put the mineral drops into the RO water and antioxidant tea I drink every day.
I take chlorella before each meal, 12 tablets.

If I were taking charcoal I would take it in-between meals as it binds with vitamins and beneficial minerals. You should not take charcoal long-term so I will use that only when I mobilize.

If I were taking clay capsules I would take them in-between meals with warm water.
I have decided to take clay-epsom-salt baths once a week instead of the capsules.



I still plan to do the program outlined above once I get my Ancestry.com results.

I will follow those parts of Dr. Bredesen's diet that agree with my SWAMI, and will add the daily 12-hour fast.  I already take most of the supplements he recommends and will add the few I don't.)



FOURTH, when I have finished detoxing, order the lab tests recommended by Dr. Bredesen and work to optimize the results.  At this point I will have eliminated heavy metals and other toxins like glyphosate so any inflammation and endocrine problems should have resolved themselves.  If not, I will need to find a functional/restorative doctor to help with this, preferably a Klinghardt practitioner.

(If you follow the Bredesen Protocol diet, make sure you also follow the lectin advice that both SWAMI and Opus23 provide.)






DETOXING - Why do it

This post is PART ONE of a compilation of the many detox protocols I've read about over the past 4-5 years.  I do not have any of the symptoms associated with heavy metal toxicity but I'm sure they are in my body because I have not lived my life in a valley in the Rockies or a remote forest in South America.

Using Dr. Bredesen's criteria, the likelihood that I'm toxic is low so I feel that I can safely eliminate what's in my body - without a practitioner's help - because I don't have much to get rid of.  However, knowing that the brain is the last part of the body to release metals, it makes sense to me to completely clear them from my body.

If you have any of the symptoms of heavy metal toxicity 
then you must use a trained professional to help you get rid of them 
or you can make yourself worse!

Dr. Deitrich Klinghardt is one of the leading natural medicine physicians in the world.  Described as, "one of the most brilliant and gifted medical pioneers of our time," Dr. Klinghardt has contributed significantly to the understanding of metal toxicity and its connection with disease.  It is this part of his work that interests me - eliminating toxins.

The remainder of this post are the notes I took while watching Dr. Klinghardt's video.   Although the video seems to be an advertisement for the products he uses, what I got from the video is HIS TECHNIQUE - what he does to detoxify his patient's bodies. (A partial transcript is available HERE.)

Below are my notes on WHY he says we all need to detox heavy metals:


Almost all the illnesses we’re facing right now are linked to pollution of our environment.  Aluminum in the water and the air, mercury in your mouth (fillings and dentures (The pink element that makes the gums of the dentures pink is mercury sulfate and cadmium sulfate. )),  glyphosate in air, soil, and food.  Conventional agriculture has poisoned our food chain.

EVERY AMERICAN has these substances in their body, unless you live in a valley in the Rocky Mountains.

A very aggressive treatment use in Germany called apheresis, a 3-hour procedure similar to dialysis, discovered that EVERY AMERICAN they tested (several hundred) is filled with nanonized aluminum and organophosphates (Round-up).  The amounts found are 100 times higher than lead, mercury, or cadmium.  No lab in the US can make this diagnosis.  It doesn’t show up in hair analysis or other challenge tests.

When our inner environment is polluted, microbes that have lived symbiotically with us become more virulent and aggressive. We become out of balance.  Not only in the gut – everywhere in our bodies. Parasites concentrate toxins in themselves; they are here because we are polluted, they help us by taking toxins out, but there is a cost.   Diagnosis is difficult because no lab in the US can detect them.    We all have parasites because of environmental pollution.


22:29 Alzheimer’s has 4 components: mercury, aluminum, Lyme spirochetes, herpes simplex type1.  When we address those 4 issues, we can very often reverse, or at least, halt the progression.  (note: Dr. Bredesen also mentions Lyme and herpes simplex.)

To get mercury and aluminum out of the brain is the intent of all detox programs, because the brain is the last part that gives up metals.  So, if you get it out of the brain, you’ve detoxed the entire body.  If the body is full of mercury and aluminum, and there’s a little in the brain that causes Alzheimer’s, you can’t get it out until the rest of the body is clear.  Working against an osmotic gradient is impossible.

Once you get mercury out,  you increase the body's ability to eliminate all other toxic metals.  This is because mercury can cause a zinc deficiency and your detox pathways need zinc.

1:23 - Glyphosate (Round-up) is a chelator for minerals and prevents them from being absorbed.  Therefore, most of us are trace mineral deficient even if you eat organic (because glyphosate is in the air).   There is also a synergy between glyphosate and aluminum.  When bound with aluminum, glyphosate transports it deep into the brain and central nervous system. We cannot differentiate between detoxing aluminum and glyphosate. 

Lead in our bones is 400-1000x higher than 200 years ago.  It causes osteoporosis.  To get lead out of bone – replace lead with zinc.  Lyme disease causes an enzyme blockage that increases depletion of zinc, b6, molybdenum, biotin, glutathione into urine.  Urine can be tested for it.  Klinghardt uses CORE to replace in amounts higher than what the body is losing.



All of the above in conjunction with this page on avoiding toxins have convinced me I need to detox.

DETOXING - How to - PRELIMINARY STEPS

Excerpts from interview with Chris Shade, supposedly foremost expert on heavy metal detox:

The Mercury Tri Test is the most accurate way to determine how much mercury you have in your body and where it's coming from - dental amalgams, environment, or food.  Knowing which type helps you determine which organ/process needs shoring up - inorganic mercury requires additional kidney support before starting any detox protocol. 

To detect heavy metals besides mercury, Shade uses an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) scan of blood for nutrient and toxic metals. This is important, because you need to have your nutrient metals in order before you can go after toxic metals. Most of the toxic metals displace zinc, and zinc drives many important metabolic reactions. If you have low zinc, you're not going to be able to detoxify metals well. 


Detoxing involves squeezing the toxin out of the cell into your blood circulation, and then filtering out the metals through your kidneys, liver, and GI tract. 

However, you need to begin by assessing your filtration capacity before you start moving toxins out of your tissues. If you're feeling awful, it means toxins are building up in circulation faster than they're being filtered out.  

FIRST optimise your filtration mechanisms:

1. Insure colon is functioning correctly - as least 2 bowel movements per day.

The reason for this is that if a person has a slow bowel transit time most of the mercury eliminated in the bile will be reabsorbed from the large intestines.

The body can cause loose stool to speed up elimination of toxins.  This causes the bile containing the  mercury to be jettisoned before it can be reabsorbed.  Unfortunately, most mercury toxic bodies have lost the ability to empty the bowels with diarrhea.

People with a long history of constipation usually have higher-than-normal mercury levels.

The best way to improve colon transit time is to eat more raw and fermented vegetables!  Taking a probiotic (Bredesen recommends ProbioMax) will help if your microbiome has been compromised.  Colon Corrective by Baseline Nutritionals is designed to support intestinal health prior to starting a detox program.



2. Insure minerals are balanced.

Mercury can accumulate in the stomach lining and decrease stomach acid secretions so one cannot assimilate essential minerals like selenium and zinc.  Your detox pathways require zinc to function correctly and selenium is a potent binder for zinc.

Fortify your mineral stores by
  1. eating a colorful array of foods rich in zinc and selenium
  2. supplementing (you MUST see a practitioner for this because excess minerals can be toxic), and 
  3. getting enough vitamin D.   
Applied Kinesiology is one way to determine what you need.



3. Get detox pathways working.  

Methylation enables the body to make glutathione which enables the liver to pull mercury out of the blood and put it into the bile.   This pathway MUST BE WORKING to detox metals.  The best way to insure this is to have your genome decoded and then take the required supplements to get methylation activity going.

If you don't want to have your genome decoded, read this for advice on optimizing your methylation pathways. 


Glutathione

Inflammation can almost completely prevent the body from making glutathione and the metalothiones needed to eliminate toxic metals.  ALA supplementation (Alpha Lipoic Acid) can reduce inflammation if it's in the body 24 hours a day.  Look for timed release ALA.  ALA supplementation can cause an increase in blood mercury levels that result in symptoms.

Many people are deficient in one or more of the amino acids that glutathione is made from, cysteine and/or glycine, due to a vegetarian or over-cooked diet.  When these deficiencies are present, ALA will not increase glutathione production.

You can supplement with L-cysteine (made from hair (ick!)) but it's best to get it from food.  Both cysteine and glycine are present in all high-protein foods with the best source being RAW MILK which contains "exceptional amounts of cysteine; and most importantly, in the form that can enter cells."

Increasing glutathione production can increase mercury being dumped into the bloodstream faster than it can increase the liver's ability to transport mercury to the intestinal tract.  Approach this slowly!

Mercury can block the body's ability to convert glutathione into s-transferase, the form needed to kick mercury out of the tissues/cells storage sites and into the blood stream.   


Liver
As the largest glandular organ in the body, the liver spends its days carrying out hundreds of crucial metabolic functions. The two most important are filtering out toxic waste and determining where nutrients will be used. These two functions are vital to a successful detoxification.

Burdock, dandelion, milk thistle, Livco by MediHerb, and bitters like gentian and myrrh
Clear Way cofactors, high in haritake herb, increase liver function
Digeodren  
According to this article by Dr. Cowan:
The treatment of the liver always starts with the diet. The emphasis should be on greens, the bitter and sour tastes, and the healthy consumption of saturated fats. Protein intake should be low to moderate but healthy raised animal fats should be consumed as tolerated. I tell patients to start every morning with a glass of water with a half of lemon squeezed into the water and then eat some animal fat (especially grass-fed butter or ghee) and greens (such as dandelion greens or the more bitter greens) at every meal. The green color is the most pure reflection of plant life and this stimulates the detoxification processes in the liver. The fats are used by the liver to help make the enzymes that do this detoxification work. A mixture of cod liver oil and butter oil helps to make sure a supply of healthy fats and fatsoluble vitamins is available to nourish your liver.
The best studied plants for liver nourishment include milk thistle and schisandra. These two herbs come together in the Mediherb product called Livco, which has been shown to promote healthy liver function.


Kidney
As mobilized toxins move through blood vessels they are hugely inflammatory.
The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products and chemicals from the blood and eliminating the waste products into the urine before they build up in the tissue and contaminate the cells.  As contaminants unbind from the tissue into the bloodstream, it is important to support the kidney; otherwise, the contaminants can once again bio-accumulate into the tissue.


Dandelion, cranberry (a diuretic), solidago (goldenrod), and corn silk
Garlic, vitamin E, and Phytocort (1 cap 2x/day) help prevent/reduce damage.
Wild/bear garlic (pipettefull 3-4x/day) clears metal and toxic residues from kidneys
Galactose (1 t. few x/day) heals autoimmune disease of the kidneys
RO water with Matrix liquid electrolyte solution, Microminerals, and silica


Thanks to another friend, I've just leaned of new way to prepare your body for detoxing:

Get your interstitium working to clear your lymph nodes

Dr. Klinghardt recommends Sophia Flow which helps clear the lymph nodes in your brain!



SECOND, line your gut with binders. 

Line the entire gut with binders so that when mobilizers are introduced, the binders are waiting.  Without the binders, mobilized toxins will be redistributed to worse places, like your brain.

Chris Shade recommends a cocktail of binders but he's not as specific as Klinghardt:
"...a metal-specific one like IMD (a silica/thiol resin binder) or chlorella,
charcoal (which gets mycotoxins (fungi), except for aflatoxin),
bentonite clay (which gets aflatoxin but not the other mycotoxins). 
Zeolite for pesticides and herbicides."
Thiol resins are, supposedly, the best binders for metals.
Dr. Shade's company, Quicksilver, also offers Ultra Binder which combines all the above.  

Some practitioners recommend IMD (Intestinal Metal Detox by Quicksilver).
Others use NDF by Bioray which claims to eliminate most metals including uranium and that other products are not broad-spectrum.  

Klinghardt recommends the following:
The products he uses are available at BioPure and were formulated to support his practice.   Some of them contain ingredients I avoid, like xanthan gum, and I have found similar cheaper products elsewhere but I'm conflicted about using them  Cheaper is not always better....
Zeobind CLINOPTILOLITE - most zeolites are toxic, CLINOPTILOLITE binds toxic metals, organophosphates, insecticides, pesticides, dyes, drug residues, etc…, needs to be taken with horsetail which binds with aluminum in silicate.  Universal binding agent.  Take away from food.  1 spoon 2xday. 

Microsilica - sulfhydra groups attached to spherical silica = most effective binder for sulfhydrl- affinitive metals lead, cadmium, nickel, mercury, barium, everything except iron and aluminum.  Best for mercury detox.  Take orally for 20 min, then spit.  Or can be swallowed

MetalSweep - (microsilica plus vit C for prolonged effect along entire gut)

Calcium bentonite living green clay - potent binder of plant and mold based biotoxins. 1 t 2xday with water inbetween meals for mold and yeast toxicity.  3-6 weeks

Chlorella PYRENOIDOSA - (mobilizer and chelator) extracts from blood host of toxins, including heavy metals, chemicals and pesticides, that then don’t go through kidneys.  Must be in light-sealed package, protected from EMP, w broken cell membrane.  Pyrenoidosa membrane binds more but is a less bioavailable nutrient (because of membrane). 

PC Ecklonia Cava - brown algae extract with same metal binding capacity as chlorella but different spectrum.  Helps with ED.  Induces deep delta sleep. 4-6 caps at bedtime

I plan to follow Klinghardt's protocol but add activated charcoal to bind mycotoxins.  If you use activated charcoal you must NOT take it within 3 hours of other medication or supplements or it may bind with them, too.  It also binds with IRON and can cause ANEMIA.  Here's a quote from Bulletproof.com
When to avoid taking charcoal: Never take activated charcoal with prescription medications or with other supplements. Charcoal binds a lot of substances – even the good stuff like prescription medications, vitamins, and minerals. Wait 2-3 hours after taking charcoal to take other supplements or meds and talk to your doctor about the details.
Drink plenty of water: Excessive charcoal consumption, especially without magnesium, can result in constipation. Take 300-400 mg magnesium glycate about 3 hours after taking charcoal and drink plenty of water to avoid constipation.
And speaking of poop…
If you use activated charcoal, it will turn your poop black.


A WORD OF CAUTION:  A few years ago, I took chlorella and selenium before a restaurant meal hoping to trap the toxins in my gut before they could enter my body.  Shortly after the meal I had explosive diarrhea!  What this told me is that the meal was indeed full of toxins, the binders did trap them, and my body got rid of them.  Fortunately we were close to a bathroom!  When you start taking the binders go slowly and make sure you'll be home for the next few hours! 

Focus on chelation to ensure the concentration of heavy metals in the body is much lower than it is in the brain so that when you introduce the mobilizing agent  you are drawing heavy metals OUT of the brain and tissues.  If the osmotic gradient is too high, those metals will be carried INTO the brain.  


(NOTE: If there is evidence that the liver is malfunctioning or there is insufficient methylation, an alternative detoxification route is through the urinary tract. ACZ Nano and NDF Plus can lower blood mercury levels without the need for any glutathione.   CAUTION - this idea needs more research - see a practitioner!)

DETOXING - How to - MOBILIZING TOXINS

This post is PART THREE of a compilation of the many detox protocols I've read about over the past 4-5 years.  I do not have any of the symptoms associated with heavy metal toxicity but I'm sure they are in my body because I have not lived my life in a valley in the Rockies or a remote forest in South America.

Using Dr. Bredesen's criteria, the likelihood that I'm toxic is low so I feel that I can safely eliminate what's in my body - without a practitioner's help - because I don't have much to get rid of.  However, knowing that the brain is the last part of the body to release metals, it makes sense to me to completely clear them from my body.

If you have any of the symptoms of heavy metal toxicity 
then you must use a trained professional to help you get rid of them 
or you can make yourself worse!

The remainder of this post are the notes I took while watching Dr. Klinghardt's video.   While the video seems to be an advertisement for the products he uses, what you should get from the video is HIS TECHNIQUE - what he does to detoxify his patient's bodies. (A partial transcript is available HERE.)

Here are my notes on how to mobilize toxins so they can be escorted out:

Do not mobilize toxins until you have completed the preliminary steps or you will make your condition worse!

THIRD, mobilize the toxins:

Metals are stored in several body compartments - intracellular, extracellular (connective tissue), intravascular, kidneys or gut wall, and central nervous system.  Each compartment requires a different detoxification approach.

Begin detoxification by unloading the connective tissue, gut and colon. 

This is best achieved with chlorella.  Chlorella binds with metals, chemicals, organophosphates, dyes, preservatives, PBDEs, and dioxins and excretes them in fecal matter.

At the same time, chlorella is uniquely designed NOT to bind the minerals your body needs like calcium, magnesium, or zinc.  50% of the weight of chlorella is amino acids which are almost identical to the composition of breast milk.  It also contains minerals, fatty acids, all b vitamins including methyl b12.

Keep in mind that chlorella is high in iron.  Men and postmenopausal women should have their levels checked regularly.

Chlorella PYRENOIDOSA has the greatest ability to attract heavy metals but the cell was must be broken.  It's the membranes that are the chelating agent.  Chlorella vulgaris has higher CGF (chlorella growth factor) and is easier to digest but has a lower ability to attract heavy metals.

BioPure also sells a product called C.V.E. (Chlorella Vulgaris Extract) that Klinghardt uses in conjunction with PYRENOIDOSA.

The cleanest chlorella is grown in Taiwan.  Chlorella from China or Japan can be contaminated.  It must be in light-sealed package and protected from EMP.  I get my tablets from The Raw Food World and store them in the fridge.

Freeze Dried Garlic binds with hydro-affinitive metals and is used in conjunction with chlorella.

Once the gut and connective tissues are clean, begin intracellular detoxifcation:

We need something to trigger the cell to give up its toxic content.

Cilantro will move mercury, cadmium, aluminum, lead and tin stored in the brain, bones, central nervous system and in the spinal cord, and move it out of the cells and brain into the connective tissue where chlorella is used to escort it out of the body. Certain growth methods enhance this effect.  2 pipettes 3xday before meals.  

Matrix Metals Spray - nanonized cilantro plus other plants.  Adult dose = 8 sprays 2xday.

CurcuSyn - Curcumin combined with piperine and ginger and taken with coconut oil triggers cells to release lead and mercury.  

Because cilantro mobilizes/releases more toxins than it is able to attach to and carry out of the body itself, it may well flood the connective tissue (where the nerves reside) with metals, that were previously locked into 'safer' (less immediately damaging) hiding places. This retoxification can be avoided to an extent by taking an absorbant such as chlorella or bentonite clay.

To begin with, start with a very low dosage, such as two drops twice a day of tincture. Use cilantro for one week, then take two weeks off. Repeat as necessary. As one slowly increases the dosage, one can take it daily without a break and build up to a maximum of ten drops two or three times a day.  It is best to take cilantro 30 minutes after taking chlorella/bentonite or just before a meal. It is important to try to take the Cilantro immediately before a meal. The idea is that the cilantro stimulates increased bile release, which then mixes with the cilantro/bentonite clay in the intestine, which helps to absorb all the toxins and metals present in the increased volume of bile.

If you are taking your maximum comfortable level of cilantro, and are not experiencing any side effects (headaches, fatigue, constipation etc) be very careful to monitor your water consumption. Maintain at least the same level of water consumption every day. If your routine changes and you neglect to drink enough water for just a day or two, you may experience severe fatigue and a gradually increasing headache. If this is the case, then you are starting to retoxify yourself, and you need to immediately drink more water and reduce your cilantro dosage slightly.

How do we get the toxins released from these cells to shuttle through connective tissue, into bloodstream, and into small intestine?

This is ONLY done with sulfhydryl-containing amino acids.

Whey has a high number of sulfhydryl-containing amino acids (does not work for iron and aluminum).

Freeze dried garlic contains sulfur componds that are helpful in attaching to sulfhydryl-affinitive metals (not iron and aluminum) to transport out of organs. Great detoxifier for everything toxic in our system. 

Animal protein, supplies sulfur-containing amino acids which help chelate toxic metals and support liver detoxification pathways.

Do not overcook meats, and eggs should be only lightly cooked such as soft-boiled or poached so the yolks are runny.

Other high-sulfur foods include vegetables in the cabbage, radish, garlic and onion families.  Sulfur is very helpful for detoxification in general, and for mercury and copper, in particular.


Sulfur containing substances like garlic, DMPS or DMSA mobilize mercury in the kidneys.  DMPS and DMSA MUST be administered by a professional and your condition monitored.

How to detox glyphosate (round-up):
The main binder for gylphosate is zeolite CLINOPTILOLITE.

Some plant adaptogens found in certain berries turn on enzymes that clear the stuff from our bodies – acai berry, plums, pomegranate, rosehip (200x more effective than ascorbic acid). 
Deep Purple combines acai berry, plums, pomegranate, rosehips. 

If you also have glyphosate, you must add fulvic or humic acid.  They both form such a strong bond with glyphosate that (1) it will release the aluminum and (2) it will also be excreted in the stool.  Fulvic/humic acid surrounds the glyphosate so that it cannot escape the bond.

Matrix Minerals 1-2oz/day clears glyphosate from humans.
Metal Magic -  chlorella, cilantro, and fulvic acid.  Fulvic acid contains small amounts of sulfur, which will detox the kidneys.  

As Fulvic and Humic Acids are such poweful mobilising agents, one may elect NOT to take them at the start of a detoxification programme, but be used in the latter half of a chelation programme, and should ideally be taken in conjunction with another chelating agent to bind with the heavy metals that are mobilised/drawn out of the blood and tissues, although this is not strictly necessary. Mobilising agents work best when taken in small doses regularly, rather than large doses.

Another factor to bear in mind if drinking large quantities of fulvic and/or humic acid is that it will tend to slightly lower the body's pH, and so one may want to offset this with an alkaline food or supplemental intake. As fulvic and/or humic acid are both acidic (!), then if drinking them undiluted, on a regular basis, one may want to brush one's teeth afterwards to avoid excessive acidic erosion of the tooth enamel.

How to detox aluminum:
Cilantro is strong mobilizer for aluminum but aluminum needs 2-3 extra items.

Lemon juice (citric acid) in a water bottle throughout the day 
electrolyte enhanced wildcrafted cilantro tincture is most effective,
small particle bioavailable silica from horsetail teaSynthetic silica does not bind aluminum.
DEO – cilantro based deodorant pulls toxins from armpits use 2x/day. Aluminum and parabens are found in breast tissue.

How to detox lead from bones:
Replace lead with zinc using CORE 4-16 caps/day (make sure you’re mobilizing it).

For viruses
VITAL 4 plus small doses of nystatin along with it, activates t-cell activity in gut, amazing powerful treatment for viral infections.  Basic ingredients based on research done by military,
KEY FIVE – other herbs used by native americans (when settlers gave them measles-contaminated blankets) which otherwise would have wiped out entire tribe,
VIRESSENCE – vital 4 plus key 5 – easier for practitioner but detracts slightly from effectiveness.

DETOXING - How to - OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Light-based therapies work on the basis of draining toxins from the lymphatic system as well as stimulating the release of toxins from the inter- and intra-cellular membranes (cell and mitochondria membranes). The toxins themselves are then freed up in the bloodstream and are eliminated mainly by the liver and kidneys, but also though sweat and breath to a smaller extent.

Light-based therapies are commonly used to help promote the elimination of glutathione conjugates or neurotoxins that are attached to and impairing the inter- and intra-cellular membranes, especially the mitochondrial membranes. Such a condition is known as Neurotoxic Membrane Syndrome or NMS.

Please note that anyone who engages in regular activities involving sweating (!), whether they are saunas, work outs etc., it is very important to replace the lost electrolyte minerals calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and chloride either in one's diet or through supplementation (or both) as otherwise this can result in severe mineral depletion over time and mineral deficiencies.

If you are commencing on a regular FIR sauna regime, it may be wise to temporarily suspend taking any oral chelating agents, or at least allow for enough days after the FIR Sauna before you start taking chelating agents, and of course not to take any additional chelating agents on the day of the FIR Sauna. Otherwise, if you do the maximum comfortable duration/amount of FIR saunas, plus the maximum comfortable daily dosage of chelation product, then you will in effect be loading the liver twice as much as you would if you only stuck to one.



It will be crucial to lower your body fat as low as possible as this will remove large amounts of toxins from your body that are stored there. You can also use the infrared sauna in conjunction with exercise and niacin

Why I'm going to detox before following Bredesen's protocol:

Heavy metal toxicity can contribute to both inflammation and endocrine problems, AND I believe that all of us have excess heavy metals because we cannot avoid them .

In addition...we all have glyphosate (Round-up) in our bodies, even if we eat 100% organic, because it's in the air (and because even organic corn and soy, which is fed to all the animals we eat, is contaminated with glyphosate due to drift).

Glyphosate chelates (binds) minerals, like zinc, and prevents it from being absorbed.  Our bodies need zinc to detox heavy metals like mercury.  Mercury also prevents us from utilizing zinc which compounds the problem!  To make matters worse, aluminum binds with glyphosate which means we have to detox both of them simultaneously.  But, if we have mercury, we have trouble detoxing other metals so we must get rid of the mercury!

If you have any MTHFR snps, your detox pathways will not be working properly and you will not be able to get rid of mercury (or any other toxins).
